A day as a fisherman
Recreational fishing, as a diversification of professional fishing, is regulated in the Mediterranean area, only in Italy, France and Algeria. Recreational fishing offers to the tourists the opportunity to discover the traditional fishermen’s skills, embarking on fishing boats, with professionals in the sector.
Although Tunisia has significant resources in the fisheries and tourism sectors, the current legal framework does not regulate this activity.
As part of the Med MPA Network project funded by the European Commission, the MAVA Foundation and the UNEP MAP, the WWF NA (World Wide Fund for Nature), the APAL, the Tabarka fishing district and the Tabarka took place on September 15th a demonstrative day of the artisanal fishing activity.
In an increasingly delicate environmental and climate context, fishing tourism not only offers new income opportunities for small fishermen, but also serves to preserve fish resources and to enhance the tangible and intangible heritage of an ancestral and emblematic Mediterranean profession.
