The mediterranean plastic soup

As part of the information events organized by MARE Outpost, on Saturday 27th January 2018, a meeting was held with the Prof. Genuario Belmonte, of the University of Salento, on “The mediterranean plastic soup”.

During the meeting was illustrated the real situation of plastics in the Mediterranean sea, their impact on marine and coastal ecosystems and the inevitable repercussions on human health.
The visible plastics along the coasts are, in fact, only the tip of an immense iceberg. Millions of tons of plastic lie on the seabed and immense quantities, chopped up by the action of the currents and exchanged for plankton by the big predators, end up on the table.

The appointment, very much attended, was an opportunity to raise awareness among those present in the adoption of responsible and attentive behaviors to marine and coastal ecosystems.
