The MUSEUM-SCHOOL in the PORT MUSEUM OF TRICASE
The Museum of Traditional Boats in the Port Museum of Tricase consists of a “static” part, a collection of objects, equipment and evidence of Mediterranean culture, kept in a small house-museum. The “active” part, represented by the fleet of traditional boats, is closely related to the Municipal School of Latin sailing.
The museum’s boats, saved from fire and destruction, carefully restored and returned to navigation, are in fact used by the instructors and students of the School during educational tours.
The sailboat Portus Veneris, about 100 years old, is the flagship of the fleet of the Museum of Traditional Boats and the first emblem of the Port Museum of Tricase because it took his name. Its story has a great symbolic importance: its journey ended in Tricase Porto in May 2002, when 98 Kurdish Iraqi refugees, fleeing from their own country, landed in Italy.
The ship Portus Veneris is a travelling museum, a venue for cultural and institutional events, a training ship where to learn and practice the traditional cordages, a symbol of the historical link with the other Mediterranean people.
