Opening of the fishing season for sardines
The sardine fishing season began in May. Although fishing for this species is authorized throughout the year in Algerian waters, at the beginning of May the fishing season is officially opened because it is in this period that sardines are most abundant in the area. The sardines are caught at night using nets, with the help of light sources to gather the fish at a certain point. The sardine is a very used and appreciated fish in the traditional Algerian cuisine.
In the month of May (from May 26th to June 24th) also start the red tuna season in Algeria. The fishermen are obliged to respect the fishing quotas assigned to each of them. Tuna are caught by the use of nets. The alive tuna is then brought to structures enabled for breeding of this species. Their fishing zone is the south of Malta.
