Increase of bluefin tuna fishing quotas
Taha Hammouche, General Director of Fisheries and Aquaculture, announced the increase in the quotas of bluefin tuna fishing. The quotas of bluefin tuna for Algeria has increased from 130 tons in 2010 to 1,300 tons in 2018 through gradual increases in these numbers. Furthermore, new increases have been established for the years 2019 and 2020.
The negotiation took place during the meeting of the Sub-Commission 2 of the ICCAT – International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna, which was held in Madrid on 5 and 6 March 2018.
The catch quotas are established through negotiations between the States and the International Commissions responsible for the conservation of tuna species threatened by overfishing.
Algeria has also recently obtained the agreement of ICCAT for the creation of 3 fattening tuna farms.. On the basis of this concession, the fishing industry has officially started feasibility studies for this activity.
