The convivence with dolphins in the Mediterranean coast of Morocco

The presence of dolphins has always represented a big problem for fishermen, throughout the Mediterranean area. On the Mediterranean coast of Morocco, the presence of dolphins, locally called “the blacks”, is creating serious problems for the sardine fishing sector. With their attacks, the dolphins destroy the nets creating a reduction in the quantities of the catch and a significant economic loss for the fishermen.

The coexistence with dolphins was peaceful until 2010. In recent years, however, the presence of dolphins has increased and their attacks have become more frequent. Because of the large scale of the phenomenon and its negative impact on the economic situation of small pelagic fisheries, the authorities have launched a monitoring program to assess the economic impact of dolphin attacks on fishing vessels and to look for solutions to limit the phenomenon.
