Swordfish fishing suspended
A statement issued by the Mediterranean Sea Fishing Chamber in Tangiers revealed that the swordfish fishery quota on the Mediterranean coast of Morocco was completely exhausted.
For this reason, the Chamber has urged all professionals in the sector to suspend the fishing of this species from 18 June 2018. The suspension will continue until the end of next July, when it will try to find an agreement with the administration concerned , to the possibility of exploiting part of the quota assigned to the Atlantic part.
The Chamber of Fisheries launched preliminary consultations with traditional and coastal fishermen in Tangier region, which led to the opening of a dialogue with the administration on swordfish quotas in the Mediterranean or in the Atlantic. Following this meeting, 27 tonnes of bluefin tuna were allocated to coastal fishing, as an additional catch, in addition to 130 tonnes of traditional fishing.
