WEBINAR | From Lebanon, the initiatives and experiences of Tyre’s fishermen
Webport hosted, on 20 March 2019, the usual monthly appointment among the coastal communities of the Mediterranean.
The diversification of fishing activities and the experiences and initiatives adopted by fishermen to safeguard giant turtles and all marine fauna, are the topics discussed by fishermen and experts from Italy, Albania, Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia.
The meeting was supported by Piero Carlino, naturalist and Director of the Sea Turtle Recovery Center of the Salento Natural History Museum, engaged as an expert in the pilot action activated by CIHEAM Bari in Lebanon under the NEMO 2018 program, for the assessment and mitigation of the impact of Tyre’s small scale fishing activities on the mortality of marine turtles
The Albanian delegation, hosted by MARE Outpost, peripheral headquarter of CIHEAM Bari, took part in the Webinar. The delegation in engaged in Tricase for the training course “Stock assessment methodology and habitat mapping tools”. The course was organized by CIHEAM Bari, together with the CNR and to the Coast Guard – Bari Maritime Directorate with the aim of providing the necessary skills for the evaluation, monitoring and conservation of fish stocks, for sustainable resource management and is part of the activities of the MARE project – Institutional Assistance for the Development of the Albanian Maritime Economy, funded by AICS Tirana and implemented in partnership with the Albanian Ministry of Environment and Tourism, the Albanian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the CNR in Italy.
Webport is the digital port that brings together fishermen from seven Mediterranean communities in dialogue, sharing and the exchange of experiences and knowledge.
Webport is conceived and implemented by Ciheam – Bari within the NEMO program, funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation and by the General Directorate for Development Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
