Sightings of rare species in Albania
It is the data reported by fishermen to provide information on two important sightings that occurred recently in Albanian sea.
This is primarily the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), of which two male specimens (one young and one adult) have been spotted.
The Mediterranean monk seal is a pinniped mammal of the family of seals, seriously threatened with extinction. Today there is the presence of less than 700 specimens in the wild.
Recently, moreover, the fishermen have reported the discovery in the nets of a specimen of Bigeye Thresher shark (Alopias superciliosus), another species considered at risk due to the high accidental catches by the fishermen, combined with the very low birth rate of the species (the females of this species give birth to a maximum of 20 small sharks in their lives).
The presence of these rare species is considered an important event that deserves special attention from both citizens and fishermen who are directly linked to the sea and in one way or another have an impact on the presence of these species.
