The Rommel Museum of Matrouh reopened
After a long process of restoration, the Rommel Museum of Matrouh was finally reopened. The Museum is dedicated to the German General Erwin Rommel, nicknamed “the desert fox”.
The Museum, opened for the first time to the public in 1988, is located in a natural arch-shaped cave, Rommel’s headquarters during the Second World War.
The museum houses a collection of uniforms, personal photos of the Nazi general, battle plans and a collection of weapons. General Rommel is a figure highly regarded by the residents of Matrouh for the respect shown for Bedouin customs and traditions. The people of Matrouh also gave his name to the nearby beach in his honor.
The reopening of the Museum is part of the action plan, implemented by the Matrouh Governorate, to revitalize tourism in the area.
