Italian experts in Marsa Matrouh
As part of the NEMO Project, activated in Egypt by CIHEAM Bari and financed by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, the mission of the Italian experts in the fishing community of Marsa Matrouh took place, starting from the 9th of February.
The mission, which lasted 5 days, consisted in a training course for fishermen. The main topics were related to: fishing techniques; hygiene rules on board and in fish handling; regulations on fish products freshness; the importance of a brand of Marsa Matrouh products for the positioning of the fish product on markets, both local and national.
The experts also carried out a series of surveys and assessments on the state of fishing in Marsa Matrouh and a careful analysis of the fishermen’ needs, for the development of their activity, an improvement in income and life conditions.
The meeting and the interviews, made by the experts, with the elderly fishermen and women, have allowed to trace and catalogue the traditions of the community, linked both to fishing and to local gastronomy.
