Geographical indication in Matrouh
On October 16, 2018, a workshop was held in Matrouh to discuss good agricultural practices on the geographical indication (GI) and for sustainable production and the increase of marketing capacities of the agricultural products of the area.
The seminar was organized as part of the project implemented by the Center for the Environment and Development of the Arab Region and Europe – CEDARE, funded by the European Union and the Italian Cooperation.
The workshop began with the presentation of the CEDARE organization and an introduction to the objectives and activities of the project.
During the workshop, the Association of Matrouh for the agricultural development of the desert – MADAD, established thanks to the NEMO-Egypt project, was introduced as a direct and main beneficiary of the project.
The Geographical Indication is a special brand, attributed to products that have unique characteristics, linked to the geographical position, environmental conditions and culture of the local community.
The seminar saw the drafting of the first drafts of the manuals for the geographical indication of the main and most important agricultural products of Matrouh: grapes, figs and olives.
