Clams in the Médenine Governorate
A significant reduction of clams was recorded in Médenine production sites.
The team was composed by Bechir Hamdi (President of GDAP EL Grine) and Fethi Naloufi (Deputy Director of Product Quality Promotion at the GIPP in Médenine), together with some students from the National Agronomy Institute of Tunis. They have conducted a series of analyses and experiments in the El Grine area, to verify the causes of this impoverishment.
The first action was the introduction of some specimens of small clams, coming from the Ajim area, and the monitoring of their growth.
Moreover, the team introducted some blue crab specimens to analyze the action of these predators on clams. They wanted to establish if the reduction of shellfish stocks is a consequence of the crabs’ presence or if depends on illegal and/or off-season fishing, as well as the fishing of small clams.
These activities were monitored and the experiments results were presented during a meeting with clam harvesters and other operators working in fishing sector.
