Plastic pollution and marine protected areas in Algeria

The workshop on “Plastic pollution and Marine Protected Areas” was held in Ain Benian on Thursday 4 October 2018, organized with the support of the General Directorate for Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries and in coordination with the national network for the protection of marine biodiversity, PROBIOM.

The workshop, characterized for the strong participation of the actors involved in pollution and marine protected areas, aimed to encourage cooperation between the various actors in order to face the challenges related to the promotion of marine protected areas and the fight against pollution. model in Algeria for a sustainable management of resources.

The workshop saw the creation of an intersectoral and interdisciplinary commission composed of institutions active in the field of microplastic analysis and monitoring and treatment of these toxic waste. The objective is to identify the situation of these pollutants along the Algerian coast and to study their impact on the environment and on fish resources, in accordance with the monitoring strategy put in place by the fishing industry.
