Sustainable fishing also includes women

Tradition in Albania, as in many other parts of the world, sees, most of the time, men engaged in work and women in the management and care of the home and children.

Even in the fishing sector, while the husband-fisherman goes out into the sea all night, his wife waits for him in the port to help him in on-shore activities and in managing the fish.

In some families, in Albania, women, wives and daughters of fishermen, have a very active role in fishing activity. The women go out with the men at sea, sometimes even for several days, to contribute to the sustenance of the family.

Xhesika Alushaj, a fisherman’s wife and daughter, talks about his life and his love for the sea: “My father was a fisherman and since I was a child, I went to fish with him. He told me many things about the sea and I learned a lot of things. I fell in love with the sea and I always wanted to live near the sea. I married a fisherman and since then I have been even closer to the sea and today I continue to work with my husband at sea and support him in his activity”.
