Biohuts in the marchica lagoon

Within the partnership signed by the Mohamed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, the Littoral Conservatory, the Water Agency for Rhône Méditerranée and Corsica, the High Commissioner for Control of water, forest and desertification, the MarchicaMed Agency, the Ecocean company has installed 50 biohuts in Atalayoun, located in the Marchica Lagoon (Nador, Morocco).

The biohuts allow the juveniles to find artificial shelter, in their post-larval and juvenile stadium, that is a critical phase in the life cycle of fish. The project aims to preserve fish resources in the Marchica Lagoon, exploited by the artisanal fishing fleet. Simultaneously, a high frequency monitoring system has been adopted to evaluate the environmental efficiency of these structures.

The first results of the monitoring confirm the effectiveness of the technique, especially for the young specimens of brown groupers (Epinephelus marginatus) and red groupers (Mycteroperca rubra).
