In Salento, the “turtle miracle”

August was a special month on the Salento beaches.

Hundreds of small sea turtles have reached the sea under the eyes of the technicians of the Natural History Museum of Salento, and this year, also of two Lebanese guests, Hassan Hamze, Deputy Director of the Tyre Coast Nature Reserve and Fadya Jomaa, Executive Director of Greenarea International .

The two are engaged, in their country, in defense of sea turtles and have arrived in Italy to train at the Salento recovery center, led by Piero Carlino, who they have already met in Lebanon thanks to the NEMO project, implemented by CIHEAM Bari and financed by the Italian Cooperation.

The NEMO project has implemented a series of awareness-raising activities for the protection of sea turtles in Lebanon.

The training covered all the main topics, from nest management to managing specimens found in difficulty.

The two Lebanese participants were thus able to acquire the necessary skills and basic knowledge, to start their recovery work in Lebanon, at the small center, currently stopped due to structural deficiencies and the lack of competence of the operators.

WEBPORT is the digital port of the Mediterranean. It is designed and edited by CIHEAM Bari. It started in 2014 with the support of the Italian Agency for Cooperation to Development.

The pages of Albania and Montenegro were created and implemented as part of the CO.CO.TOUR project funded by the INTERREG IPA CBC Italy - Albania - Montenegro program.
