Cleopatra beach in Matrouh
Cleopatra Beach, located on the narrow strip of land that closes the lagoon is one of the most beautiful and evocative beaches of the Matrouh Governorate. It is located north-west of the city at a distance of about 5 km from the town.
The beach dates back to the time of Queen Cleopatra VII, the seventh queen of Egypt. The legend that has been handed down for centuries tells that Queen Cleopatra stayed here together with her lover Marco Antonio and that it was in this waters that the two lovers were seen taking a bath.
On both sides of the beach there are two rock formations. The structure of natural rock on the left has inside a series of cavities excavated artificially to allow the sea to enter inside. Queen Cleopatra and her maids used to bathe in these cavities.
