The weekly market in Al Aaroui

As in different regions of Morocco, the souks, the traditional open-air markets, are repeated weekly in every city of Morocco.

The souk Al Aaroui, in the province of Nador, is held every Sunday and is the place of interaction between sellers of different genres, but also the opportunity for every citizen to meet, in one place, all the needs of everyday life. Farmers, livestock breeders, artisans, fishmongers and any other form of trade, from clothing to jewels, is present in the souks.

The weekly Al Aaroui souk has expressed, for decades, the social transformations of the Nador region, reflecting the trends and intensity of the region’s trade, especially with respect to the rural community.

Historically, the structure of the souks was determined by the different types of goods that were exhibited. The non-perishable and more precious goods, like jewels and perfumes, were placed in the center. In concentric circles outward there were food products, clothing, fabrics and shoes. Outside the souks, they found their space for tinsmiths, dyers, butchers, fishmongers and live animals.
