Seasonality of fishing
For fishermen, every season is different from the others for the equipment used and the related methods, places and times of use.
Sardines are usually caught with purse seine net from the middle of April and until the end of the year.
Handline fishing is practiced, in summer, with the aid of a light source. The captured sardines are used as live bait for other types of fishing. The light is also used in autumn for the squid fishing, used as bait for catching amberjack and other large fish. The use of light is limited in spring and winter.
Large fish, in the spring season approaching the coast, especially in the bays, for the laying of the eggs and forced the fishermen to use the longlines only off the coast, at depths of 150-450 meters, to capture the blue whiting, the red scorpionfish and other types of fish.
In other seasons, the longline is used at depths and in different fishing place, for other types of catches, such as several species of grouper, pagri and dentex. For each type of capture the longlines present differences in the lines used, in the measure of the hooks and the distances between each hook.
Especially in autumn and winter, drift longline is used, with 11 hooks on which chicken feathers are triggered, to capture mahi-mahi (Coryphaena Hippurus), little tunny (Euthynnus Alletteratus) and bullet tuna (Auxis Rochei).
The traps for the fishing of the sigans are used in all the seasons. They are placed on shallow water. Inside it is used to put a bait of bread, with sea grass or lettuce.
In summer, large pots are used, with lipid baits such as sardines or hares.
The octopus traps are used on deep water even 90 meters. Approximately 60-70 square cages are connected to each other, at a distance of 40 meters. Cow bones are placed inside and are used to catch large octopuses that can weigh up to 3kg.
