The shipyard in the port of Matrouh
Today, in Matrouh, there is only one shipbuilders for the construction and repair of fishing boats and yachts. It is located next to the port of Matrouh, on the eastern side of the city, overlooking the Romel Bay.
The raw material used for the construction of boats is mulberry and camphor wood, which is cut and polished, still using traditional construction techniques.
Large fishing vessels for industrial fishing are also built inside the shipyard, for which iron is used in addition to wood.
In the hold, the part in which the engine is positioned is separated, with bulkheads, from the cold room, designed to contain the fish.
On the fishing boats destined to remain at sea for long periods, a cabin is also arranged that can offer the right comfort to the crew.
Once the construction has been completed, the boat is painted and the necessary facilities are built according to the use to which the boat will be destined.
