Handicraft in the Himara community
Stone working is a very common tradition in Himara. The traditional houses were built by the owners themselves with the use of stones. These stones were engraved with forms of animals and plants for religious reasons. Even the crowns of doorway and windows were carved with different motives.
In addition to stone, traditionally, wood was used for the production of cutlery, cribs, musical instruments, small hand mills, coffee mills and the traditional shepherd’s stick.
Today, this tradition has almost disappeared. Only some seniors still know the traditional processing techniques and it will be a challenge to make sure that they not be lost.
Another traditional activity linked to handicraft is the processing of wool and hides. Used mainly in the production of clothing, shoes and various accessories, but also for the creation of a typical blanket called pelf.
