New regulations for the fishing industry have been established by the Albanian Government.
The new provisions concern both small-scale and coastal fishing, as well as large fishing vessels.
The small fishing sector in Albania currently records around 200 operators registered in the appropriate registers, but according to the competent Ministry the numbers of those who exercise this activity are decidedly higher.
The new legislation provides for small coastal fishing, which all operators in the sector are organized into associations. This provision aims to tackle the current situation of small-scale fishing that is practiced without any control and without adhering to adequate parameters and sanitary conditions.
The new legislation also involves offshore fishing carried out with large vessels. While today the fishermen communicate with paper form the type and quantity of the catches to return to port, the new provisions establish that this communication is made before the return through the use of electronic tools.
